DOPPS Expands into China
An important milestone in the China DOPPS Pilot study has just been achieved. Preliminary findings of the China DOPPS study in China were presented to a "standing room only audience" at the Chinese Society of Nephrology Meeting that was held in Nanjing, China on October 10-14, 2011. The first ever China DOPPS Investigator meeting was also held on October 14, 2011. The highly successful meeting was led by Dr. Sylvia Ramirez, with senior investigators from the China DOPPS study as well as dialysis facility medical directors in attendance. Discussions on the longitudinal phase of the China DOPPS study and a possible CKD China DOPPS study were also held.

This work reveals the potential of the DOPPS China pilot study to evaluate practice patterns and outcomes around the world. The primary aim of the pilot study is to demonstrate the feasibility of applying the DOPPS protocol to another culture. Pilot study data collection has been completed in three cities – Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. The DOPPS continues to work closely with key nephrology opinion leaders in each of the three cities. To more fully understand factors that influence practice patterns in dialysis care, it is vital to expand the study to include countries with greater variation in practice patterns.
