Tuesday, March 22, 2016 / Categories: DOPPS, CKDopps, Plain Language Summary CKDopps: New study designed to examine the effects of chronic kidney disease care Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an increasing international problem, due to an aging population and a rise in diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Minimizing the complications associated with advanced CKD and improving the transition to dialysis and transplantation represents a challenge. Addressing this challenge requires reliable evidence regarding the effects of CKD care on patient outcomes. The CKD Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (CKDopps) is a new international prospective cohort study designed to meet this challenge by describing and evaluating variation in nephrologist-led CKD practices. It expands on the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) to include patients who have not started dialysis therapy. “We are pleased to be able to expand the DOPPS Program into pre-dialysis chronic kidney disease. We anticipate that by applying the DOPPS study design to the CKD care setting, we will be able to similarly identify modifiable practices which improve patient survival and transition to end-stage kidney disease,” said Dr. Laura Mariani, lead author of this paper. CKDopps is designed to characterize nephrology clinic practice variation and identify practices associated with better outcomes, with particular focus on advanced CKD, transition to end-stage kidney disease, and the patient experience. Because data will be collected during routine clinical care in real-world practice, analyses may yield practical readily implementable findings. CKDopps aims to establish a multinational infrastructure for research, collaboration, and ancillary investigation, and is currently underway in Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States. Additional countries are encouraged to join.
